Abstract:

The primary objective of this study is to carry out an investigation on feasibility and efficiency of a new type of SMA-based isolator in seismic isolation of lattice shells. The proposed isolator entitled as multidimensional SMA spring-friction bearing (MSFB), consists of a flat sliding bearing and lateral restrainer made up of several SMA helical springs located all around the device which is to be restrained. The conceptual design and the functioning mechanism of the MSFB are briefly described. Then, the 12mm bar diameter SMA helical spring made of NiTi alloy was manufactured, and a preliminary tension-compression axial experimental study was conducted to measure its force-displacement relationships. Next, a computational model is developed to simulate the overall response of the MSFB isolators. Finally, the MSFB isolators are applied to a double-layer spherical lattice shell structure. The nonlinear time history analyses are performed to examine the response of the seismically excited double-layer spherical lattice shells considering different seismic inputs. The results show that the MSFB isolator can reduce the seismic responses of the structure effectively, which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed isolation system.
