Abstract:

In addition to seismic waves, coseismic displacement was also generated during earthquake events, which might bring severe damage to tunnel structures.Based on the dmax model for coseismic displacement by Lee as well as the idea of integral response displacement method, the numerical analysis method for circular tunnels under coseismic displacement due to strike-slip fault was developed first. Then, the response of tunnels subjected to coseismic displacement was numerically investigated. Moreover, the effects of the earthquake magnitude, the angle of tunnel axis relative to the fault trace, the fault dip angle and the epicentral distance were studied.By the numerical results, some conclusion can be drawn as:(1)The tunnel might suffer significant internal forces and deformation under coseismic displacement, which indicates that the coseismic displacement, as a kind of earthquake loadings, should also be considered in seismic analysis for tunnels.(2)The axial force that the tunnel suffers increases first and then decreases with changing the tunnel axis from being vertical to the fault trace to being parallel to the fault trace, while that is converse for the shear force.(3)The tunnel internal forces increase with the earthquake magnitude, and increase first and then decrease with the epicentral distance. However, the fault dip angle has little effect on the tunnel response. © 2022, The Editorial Board of Journal of Basic Science and Engineering.
