Abstract:

In order to meet the requirement of offshore bridges in highly seismic regions for isolation bearings with large-tonnage load capacity, displacement and durability, a novel multi-spherical sliding friction isolation bearing was developed and its constructional characteristics, working mechanism and sliding mechanism were introduced. A nonlinear restoring model of its force-displacement relationship and the formulas of the relationship with identical coefficient of all friction surfaces were established. A mechanical performance experiment of the bearing was carried out and its sliding sequence of all friction surfaces and its nonlinear restoring model were tested. The results indicate that sliding sequence in theoretical analysis is identical to that in experimental observation and the force-displacement relationships in theoretical analysis and experimental observation are consistent, thus indicating the bearing is of high dissipative energy capacity and enough displacement in earthquakes. The smart stiffness and damping behavior of the bearing under various external intense stimulations is applicable to the performance-based seismic design of bridges at the multiple levels of ground shaking.
