Abstract:
Operation of a VCSEL in the fundamental lateral mode is important for free space optical interconnects, data communication through single mode fiber, and modulation spectroscopy. Unfortunately, the VCSEL has a tendency to lase at multiple wavelengths. The two-dimensional photonic crystal (2-D PhC) structure is applied to lateral mode control of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The characteristics of lasing lateral modes in PhC-VCSEL were analyzed. The single lateral mode operating conditions of the VCSEL confined by 2-D photonic crystal has been obtained. A PhC-VCSEL maintains single-fundamental-mode operating with output power 0.6 mW and threshold current 4 mA. The full width half maximum of the lasing spectrum is less than 0.1 nm, the far field divergence angle is 8.4° and the side mode suppression ratio is over 30 dB was fabricated. Photonic crystal is an effective and flexible way to control lateral lasing modes by introducing photonic crystal confinement to top distributed Bragg reflector of VCSEL.
