Abstract:

To study the mechanism of mitigating shear-induced rutting in semi-rigid based asphalt pavement using geotextile, a series of finite element simulations are carried out to evaluate the benefits of applying geotextile reinforcement. Finite element analysis is performed by ABAQUS with consideration of plastic behavior of asphalt concrete. Parametric study is also conducted to investigate the influence of geotextile properties and layout. Outer-directed transverse shoving in middle of AC layer, the major contributor for shear-induced rutting, can be effectively reduced by integrated geotextile there and such effect can be enhanced through using high elastic modulus geotextile or more layers of geotextile. However, geotextile laid at AC bottom makes no contribution to rutting mitigation. In addition, almost all common geotextile can fulfill the requirement on tensile strength. © 2008 ASCE.
