Abstract:
Strontium iodate, Sr(IO3)(2), has been prepared by hydrothermal reactions at 170degreesC. The X-ray single-crystal structural analysis showed that it crystallizes in a new structure type with space group P (1) over bar, a = 7.0130(7) Angstrom, b = 7.0520(8) Angstrom, c = 13.088(1) Angstrom, alpha = 84.12(1)degrees, beta = 84.80(1)degrees, gamma = 63.48(1)degrees, Z = 4, R1/wR2 = 0.0442/0.1019 for 2109 observed reflections and 158 parameters. The crystal structure of Sr(IO3)(2) consists of pyramidal IO3- anions and Sr2+ cations, which are alternately arranged along the a-axis in a 2:1 ratio to form a layer-like structure. Infrared spectra further confirmed that the compound contains low symmetric IO3- groups. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
