Abstract:

The deterioration of bridges caused by heavy traffic and aggressive environment becomes increasingly significant, which results in a reduced load carrying capacity and a higher frequency repairs. Therefore, a proper and objective method for bridge condition assessment is important to help the bridge owner in decision-making of maintenance strategy regarding current budget year. This paper gives an overview of procedures for bridge condition assessment used in China, United States and some European countries. Comparisons of national codes of bridge condition evaluation have been done among these different countries. The main differences lie in the selections of main structural components, the methods of assessment, the category of condition rating and the maintenance strategies according to the result of condition rating. Four methods of calculating the condition of the whole bridge are used in different countries in order to identify the urgency or scale of the maintenance. So far, there is no national code for special bridge condition assessment, such as suspension bridge and cable-stayed bridge. Therefore, the general guidelines for condition evaluation of cable-stayed concrete bridge are given for the revision of code of bridge condition assessment in China.
