Abstract:
Residual stress is one of the most important factors for stability of large-section angles applied in transmission tower projects. The leg length of large-section angle almost exceeds 200 mm, due to which the residual stress distribution may differ greatly from normal sections. An experimental study on the residual stress of L300×30 large-section angles with and without galvanization was conducted with hole-drilling method. Based on the obtained distributions of welding longitudinal and transverse residual stresses, the influences of galvanizing and the distance to welding seam on distribution of longitudinal and transverse residual stresses were studied. The patterns of residual stress distribution of large section angles with welding end-plate were achieved. It is indicated that the distribution of welding residual stress exhibits a wave variation with the increasing distance to welding seam, and the galvanizing decreases the maximum residual stress amplitude, leading to a gentle distribution curve. The residual stress distribution law of hot-rolled angles with and without galvanization was investigated, and the effects of welds and galvanizing process were also assessed, providing references for future analysis on the performance of the large section angles. © 2020, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures.
