Abstract:

A new type of beam-column connection for large diameter concrete filled tubular column was proposed on the basis of traditional inner ring plate connections. In order to avoid the difficulty of pouring concrete and using more steel due to the wider inner ring plate, welding reinforcing bars on the inner ring plate were used, which could reduce the amount of steel and be convenient for setting reinforcing bar cage in the steel pipe column. In order to avoid the lamellar tearing of the surface of steel pipe column, flange at the beam end needs to be widened. The width and angle of flange were reasonably determined by analysis. The relationship between connection detail and stress distribution was fully analyzed by nonlinear finite element software. The rigid zone length of beam-column connection was obtained by comparative analysis. The relationship between rigid zone length and bending stiffness of frame beam was researched. In order to verify the rationality of the new type connection, experimental studies on the scale model of concrete filled tubular column and H-section beam connection were conducted. The results of finite element analysis and scaled model tests indicate that the steel bar can improve the force-transfer by inner ring plate and the stress of connection is reduced effectively. When the flange width is expanded 1.5 times and the widened angle is 1:6, the maximum stress on connection zone is significantly lower than H-section beam and the earthquake-resistant design philosophy of 'strong-joint and weak-member' is satisfied. The connection stiffness has remarkable effect on the lateral stiffness of frame structure which has concrete filled tubular column and H-section beam connections. The bending stiffness of the frame beam can be increased by more than 40 percent when the rigid zone length is about 0.4 times the diameter of steel pipe. The seismic behavior of the connection is good and the seismic design concepts of 'strong-joint and weak-member' can be realized. © 2016, Science Press. All right reserved.
