Abstract:

To meet the demands of static analysis, fixed bearings that could restrict horizontal displacement were installed in a continuous beam bridge. However, the seismic design of a continuous beam bridge would be rather difficult in high earthquake intensity regions because of fixed bearings. Some measures were taken to improve the seismic performance of continuous beam bridges to some extent, such as replacing all bearings to seismic-isolation bearings. But the seismic safety of continuous beam bridges would not be ensured by these measures when subjected to earthquakes exceeding the preset parameters. Hence, the principle of sliding-restricting was proposed, which was achieved by a Cable-sliding Friction Aseismic Bearing (CFAB). Based on the example of a continuous beam bridge, seismic performance under different types of earthquakes was investigated using a conventional method and a sliding-restricting method. It was found that the initial gap and stiffness of strand cables were two key parameters of CFAB and that the seismic force of a fixed pier could be effectively reduced by CFAB, but seismic displacement at the girder end would be increased. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.
