Abstract:
In 2001, a project 'A comprehensive air quality management study for sustainable development in the City of Tangshan, China' was initiated aimed at developing effective air quality management strategies for improving air quality in Tangshan City. This paper presents the results from extensive data collection efforts conducted in this project. The comprehensive investigation of urban air quality and air pollutant emission in the study region are introduced. The obtained data have been used to address and tackle local air pollution problems and identify complex interactions among local geographical features, social and economic conditions, meteorological characters, emission sources, ambient air quality, and pollution meteorology. The results could provide useful information for the responsible authorities in determining which aspects of the air pollution problem are deemed most important and time critical by the decision makers. Some preliminary thoughts and discussions on making air quality management decisions presented at the end of this paper suggest that effective and efficient strategies should be pursued in setting future policy for improving air quality. © 2005 ISEIS - International Society for Environmental Information Sciences.
