Abstract:
To resolve the impact of reinforcement ratio, eccentricity, and hybrid reinforcement area ratio on the failure mode and lateral displacement, and to calculate the cross-sectional bearing capacity of concrete columns, the component test method is adopted to conduct eccentric compression on six columns with hybrid reinforcement of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and steel bars. The test results showed that all specimens failed due to concrete crushing, and with high capacity, the longitudinal and transverse GFRP remained intact before failure. With appropriate reinforcement, the hybrid reinforced column achieved better ductility and GFRP longitudinal bars gained larger strength. During the test, the strain distribution of the cross section of GFRP longitudinal bars and concrete met the plane section assumption. Under the same load, the lateral displacement of hybrid reinforced columns decreased with increase in the reinforcement ratio, and increased with the increase in eccentricity and hybrid reinforcement area ratio, i.e., GFRP-to-steel bar area ratio. Based on the plane section assumption, a formula for hybrid reinforced columns cross-sectional bearing capacity calculation is established, which has a high accuracy and can be a reference for design. © 2019, Editorial Department of Journal of HEU.
