Abstract:
To investigate the effects of reinforcement type, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and the spacing and size of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) spirals on the axial compressive behavior of concrete columns reinforced with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and GFRP bars and spirals, in this study, seven columns reinforced with GFRP bars and spirals, one column reinforced with PVA steel bars and spirals and one column with no PVA reinforcement were tested under axial compression. The entire loading process and failure modes of the specimens were investigated. Equations of the axial bearing capacity, peak stress, and peak strain were obtained based on experimental data, and a new axial stress-strain constitutive model applicable to the concrete confined by GFRP spirals is proposed. The test results indicate that the entire loading process and GFRP columns failure modes are similar to those of a steel column. The bearing capacity was significantly improved by using a higher longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and the ductility was significantly improved by using smaller GFRP spirals with closer spacing at a constant volumetric stirrup ratio; however, the confinement efficiency could not be significantly improved. © 2018, Editorial Department of Journal of HEU.
