Abstract:

The growth behavior of tin whiskers on rare earth-phases was investigated. The resulted indicated that, when rare earth-phases were exposed in air, tin whiskers rapid growth phenomena would appear on the surface of them; moreover, some special morphological characteristics would be presented in their rapid growth process, like flaky tin whisker formation, many times successive turning of tin whiskers growth direction, variable cross-section growth phenomena of tin whisker, tin whisker branching and joining as well as tin whisker jointing phenomena, etc.
