Abstract:

Cold-formed steel framed shear wall is an increasingly popular lateral system for mid-rise buildings in the US due to its non-combustibility and high constructability. This paper presents a recently completed test program at the University of North Texas to investigate the behavior and performance of this lateral system when a bi-axial load (lateral and vertical) was applied. Both cyclic and monotonic tests were conducted to simulate wind and seismic loading conditions. Two types of the steel sheet walls were tested: shear walls and bearing walls. The test results were primarily used to establish non-linear dynamic finite element models for a series of cold-formed steel frame building archetypes. Incremental dynamic analyses (IDA) were performed to analyze the seismic performance of the building archetypes and a set of seismic performance factors (SPF) were obtained through the IDA analyses. The results verified the existing SPF in the US codes. The research also showed that the bearing wall could have significant impact to the seismic behavior of the mid-rise cold-formed steel frame buildings. The paper also presents an analytical approach, Effective Strip Method, to design the cold-formed steel sheet shear walls. The method provides the engineers an alternative way to determine the shear strength without conducting full-scale shear wall tests.
