Abstract:

Seven commonly used calculation methods for surrounding rock pressure were selected to analyze the influences of tunnel buried depth and tunnel width on the calculation results of surrounding rock pressure. The advantages, disadvantages and application scopes of these calculation methods were analyzed and compared. The results show that the whole soil column theory is applicable to the open cut backfill engineering regardless of tunnel width, tunnel engineering with shallow buried depth and poor surrounding rock conditions. Przewalski's formula is applicable to deep buried tunnels with definite self bearing capacity. ' Code for Design of Artificial Rock Cavern' and ' Specification for Design of Hydraulic Tunnel' are applicable to tunnels with better surrounding rock conditions and regardless of the tunnel width. Terzaghi formula and Bill Bauman formula are applicable to shallow buried tunnels with poor surrounding rock conditions. The calculation method for surrounding rock pressure in ' Code for Design of Railway Tunnel' has integrated the advantages of the whole soil column theory, Xie Jiaxiao formula and the empirical formulas based on sample statistics and surrounding rock classification. It has a relatively well-defined physical concept, and is easy to use for engineers and technicians. However, the empirical formulas couldn't give a continuous solution to surrounding rock pressure with the change of buried depth, and it is suggested to be further modified and improved by combining with theoretical analysis.
